Umbrella Music venues over the weekend, and for the first time will focus on a featured artist: saxophonist and composer JOHN TCHICAI. In the 1960’s, with groups like the New York Contemporary Five and the New York Art Quartet, Tchicai was one of the key players in developing a revolutionary aesthetic and philosophical approach to a music which later became known as “free jazz." During that time, Tchicai performed and recorded with some of the most influential musicians in jazz, including John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Archie Shepp, and Milford Graves, to name but a few.

02.22.08Soul Power Trio
Short in stature and young in energy, Aaron Getsug might appear to be a new kid on the block. However, he's already been playing out for years on the baritone saxophone and has done well in shaking up and angering some of the more established baritone tenor saxophone players in jazz, most of whom are either envious of or shocked by Getsug's vigorous approach. He can be both melodic and noisy; his solos range from Swing to adventurous improvisation. At times, it sounds and looks as if he is going to blast off of the stage. Here he takes a leap in putting down the sax and picking up the electric bass guitar for a round of heavy metal. Jazz fans will recognize Dr. Karl E.H. Seigfried from his tenure on acoustic double bass, but will be entertained to see his wizardry on electric guitar. Getsug and Seigfried are joined by Chris Avgerin on drums. Considering the sound is coming from only a trio, there's a lot going in Soul Power Trio's catchy grooves. (Andy Pierce)
